‘He’s Allowed People to Come In Here’: Calls for Impeachment
In the midst of a worsening border crisis, calls for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are reaching a boiling point. Critics argue that Mayorkas has failed to uphold the laws of the land and has put the country in jeopardy by allowing a flood of undocumented immigrants to enter unchecked.
Republican candidate Josh Moreno, who is running in the GOP primary to compete with Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, has been at the forefront of the push for Mayorkas’ impeachment. Moreno asserts that Mayorkas is “grotesquely unqualified” for his position and calls the impeachment a “no brainer.” He argues that the Secretary’s negligence has potentially allowed in “hardened criminals and terrorists” whose identities remain unknown.
A Full House Vote and Potential Trial in the Senate
The push to impeach Mayorkas is expected to come to a full House vote within days. If the vote passes, the case will proceed to the Senate for a trial. This process aims to hold Mayorkas accountable for his alleged role in failing to stem the flow of undocumented immigrants into the United States during President Biden’s tenure.
Mayorkas, however, staunchly denies the legitimacy of the impeachment effort, labeling it as “baseless” and “false.” In a letter to House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green, Mayorkas asserts that the accusations do not sway him from his dedication to law enforcement and public service.
Border Crisis: A Call for Zero-Tolerance
Josh Moreno highlights the gravity of the border crisis, emphasizing that an average of 5,000 people cross into the country illegally every day, which amounts to over 1 million individuals annually. Moreno argues that the proposed solution of increasing border security to 8,500 personnel would still allow almost 3 million illegal crossings each year.
Moreno insists on the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigration and advocates for a comprehensive reform of asylum laws. He firmly believes that there should only be one way to enter the United States – legally. Any illegal crossing should result in immediate deportation and forfeiture of the right to asylum.
President Biden’s Role and Republican Stance
Moreno points out that President Biden has the ability to secure the border immediately using existing laws. However, he accuses Biden of deliberately choosing not to do so. Moreno argues that Republicans should not provide cover for the President during an election year, allowing him to feign action while disregarding the issue he himself has exacerbated.
As the push for Mayorkas’ impeachment gains momentum, the nation eagerly awaits the outcome of the full House vote and the potential trial in the Senate. The border crisis remains a pressing issue, and the debate surrounding it continues to shape the political landscape.
