Confidential Source Accused of Making False Statements to FBI
Special counsel David Weiss has brought felony charges against FBI confidential source Alexander Smirnov, 43, for allegedly providing derogatory and false information about President Joe Biden and Hunter Biden to the bureau. Smirnov faces charges of making a false statement and creating a false record related to his interactions with the FBI.
Allegations of False Information
Charging documents reveal that Smirnov, a confidential source for the FBI, allegedly provided fabricated details about President Biden and Hunter Biden in 2020. He reportedly falsely claimed that executives associated with Burisma had hired Hunter Biden to influence his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, in a bid to resolve legal issues faced by the Ukrainian energy company.
Indictment and Arrest
Weiss’s indictment asserts that Smirnov misrepresented his interactions with Burisma executives and manipulated the information to implicate President Biden. Following his arrest at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Smirnov is set to appear in court to face the charges, which carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison if convicted.
