Women’s Leotard Design Draws Criticism
Nike’s latest design for the US women’s Olympic team outfit has sparked a social media frenzy, with athletes and fans expressing discontent. The women’s leotard, featuring a high-cut bikini line, has faced backlash, with former US athlete Lauren Fleshman calling it a “costume born of patriarchal forces.”
Nike Responds to Criticism
In response to the criticism, Nike stated that the leotard design is just one of many styles available for athletes, emphasizing a range of options and tailoring choices. Nike’s Chief Innovation Officer, John Hoke, highlighted that the designs were created in collaboration with athletes to ensure comfort and performance.
Athletes Voice Concerns
US long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall expressed her discomfort with the outfit, stating, “Wait my hoo haa is gonna be out.” Olympic champion pole vaulter Katie Moon, also a Nike athlete, noted that the outfit on display was concerning but reassured that alternative options are provided for athletes.
Call for Change in Women’s Sport Apparel
This controversy adds to the ongoing discussion around the sexualization and policing of women’s sportswear. The German women’s gymnastics team’s decision at Tokyo 2020 to opt for full-body unitards over bikini-cut versions highlighted a shift towards less sexualized attire in sports.
