Wolves Propose Removing Video Assistant Referee for 2024/25 Season
Premier League clubs are gearing up for a crucial vote on whether to eliminate the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system from the upcoming season. The proposal, initiated by Wolverhampton Wanderers, is set to be deliberated at the annual general meeting of all 20 clubs on June 6.
Wolves Push for Change
Wolves, led by chairman Jeff Shi, have spearheaded the movement to oust VAR after facing a series of contentious refereeing decisions this season. Shi questioned the necessity of VAR in football, especially after a recent incident where a crucial goal was disallowed against West Ham. The resolution put forth by Wolves requires the support of at least 14 clubs to be implemented.
VAR Under Fire
In a statement, Wolves expressed concerns about VAR’s impact on the sport, highlighting issues such as fans’ celebration being dampened, confusion caused by extended VAR checks, and a perceived decline in on-field referees’ authority. The club emphasized the need for a critical evaluation of VAR’s effectiveness after five seasons in the Premier League.
Premier League’s Stance
Despite Wolves’ strong stance against VAR, the Premier League has expressed its support for the technology. The League plans to engage in discussions with clubs regarding VAR at the upcoming meeting, emphasizing its commitment, along with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), to enhancing the VAR system for the benefit of the game and fans.
Global VAR Debate
While VAR is a fixture in major European leagues, the rejection of the technology by Sweden adds to the ongoing debate. Swedish football authorities opted against VAR implementation following objections from clubs, echoing the concerns raised by Wolves in the Premier League.
