Raducanu Chooses Fitness Over French Open Qualifiers
Emma Raducanu, the British tennis sensation, has decided to withdraw from this year’s French Open qualifying matches. The 21-year-old’s ranking did not secure her a direct entry into the tournament, and she was not granted a wildcard, necessitating her participation in the qualifying rounds. However, Raducanu made the tough decision to prioritize her fitness over the qualifiers.
“It’s important for me to keep laying the foundations and I will use the time to do a healthy block before the grass and subsequent hard court seasons to give myself a chance to keep fit for the rest of the year,” Raducanu stated, according to The Times tennis journalist Stuart Fraser.
Still Third Alternate for French Open Main Draw
Although Raducanu withdrew from the qualifiers, she remains the third alternate for the French Open’s main draw, set to commence on May 26. In the event that three players withdraw, Raducanu could still have the opportunity to compete in the prestigious tournament.
CNN has reached out to Raducanu’s agent for further comments on her decision.
Struggles and Comeback Attempts
After her historic victory at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has faced challenges in maintaining consistent form and fitness. Following surgeries on her wrists and ankle in May 2023, she missed last year’s French Open and Wimbledon to focus on recovery. Currently ranked 212 in the world, Raducanu had hoped to use this season to regain her competitive edge on the court.
