Agreement Details and Stages Ahead
The Jacksonville Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville have reached a groundbreaking deal worth $1.4 billion to move forward with their ambitious “Stadium of the Future” project. The agreement involves a substantial contribution of $625 million from each side for the renovation of the Jaguars’ current home, EverBank Stadium. The city has also allocated an additional $150 million to prepare the stadium for construction by 2026.
The proposal, announced last year, must undergo two crucial stages before receiving final approval. Firstly, city council members are set to vote on the project in June, requiring a majority of 19 members to pass. Following this, the proposal will be presented at the annual NFL owners meeting in October, where at least 24 out of 32 owners must approve the plan.
Mayor Deegan’s Enthusiastic Response
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expressed pride and excitement over the historic deal, emphasizing its significance in the city’s downtown development. She highlighted the commercial revenue generated by the project, which will support various initiatives across Jacksonville neighborhoods.
Mayor Deegan stated, “It’s a crucial step in the development of a thriving downtown which generates the commercial revenue that will fund so much of what we want to do in neighborhoods across the city.“
Stadium Renovation and Innovations
The Jaguars’ proposed renovations include an environmentally friendly and innovative design that aims to provide a unique fan experience. Key features of the project include a transparent protective canopy for sun, wind, and rain protection, a 360-degree concourse, cutting-edge digital and lighting technology, and a subtropical nature park open year-round to visitors.
The team plans to maintain a strong connection with the community by continuing to play one game annually in London. The renovated stadium will initially have a reduced capacity in 2026, with the Jaguars temporarily relocating their home games during the following season while construction takes place.
Future Plans for EverBank Stadium
Upon completion, EverBank Stadium’s regular capacity of 67,814 will be adjusted to around 63,000, expandable to 71,500 for special events such as concerts or college football games. The Jaguars, led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, are committed to enhancing the fan experience and ensuring the team’s presence in Jacksonville for the next 30 years.
The Jaguars, who finished last season with a 9-8 record, are eager to unveil their reimagined stadium and solidify their position in the AFC South division.
