Discovery of Weapons Chest and Armor Pieces
Maritime archaeologists from Stockholm University and Södertörn University have uncovered a treasure trove of historical artifacts while exploring the wreckage of the Griffin, a ship that sank in 1495 following a fire. The Griffin served as the flagship of King John, also known as Hans, of Denmark-Norway, who reigned from 1481 to 1513, as per Stockholm University.
Preserved Secrets of the Past
The research team found that although the shipwreck is “partly disintegrated,” several well-preserved relics remain on the seabed. Notably, floor timbers offering insights into the vessel’s structure and military capabilities, as well as remnants of combat platforms, were among the discoveries. These findings are crucial for reconstructing and analyzing the ship’s superstructure in the future.
Key Discoveries
Among the remarkable discoveries is a “unique” ammunition-making tool chest filled with lead plates and cans that likely stored powder. Lead molds and plates for crafting bullets were found inside, shedding light on early handgun technology. The chest, believed to have belonged to German mercenaries aboard the Griffin, has been hailed as a significant find by lead maritime archaeologist Rolf Warming.
Insights into Naval Warfare
The recovered weapons and armor pieces have provided valuable insights into naval combat strategies during the era. The armor fragments, possibly from a mail shirt with up to 150,000 rings, offer a glimpse into the defensive gear worn by seafarers of that time. Warming highlighted the importance of the Griffin in understanding the “military revolution at sea” during the Early Modern Period, emphasizing the transition to heavy naval artillery.
Comparisons to Iconic Shipwrecks
Researchers draw parallels between the Griffin and other well-known wrecks like the Mars and the Vasa, the latter being displayed in Stockholm since its salvage in the 1960s. The discoveries from the Griffin are enriching our understanding of maritime history and the evolution of naval warfare techniques during this pivotal period.
