Emmy Awards Delayed Due to Strikes; Coincides with MLK Holiday
In a recently released list of the most memorable TV moments, Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered during the March on Washington in 1963, takes the sixth spot. This year’s Emmy Awards, which were delayed by four months due to strikes by Hollywood actors and writers, will be held on the same day as the MLK holiday.
Real-Life and Fictional Moments Make the List
The top positions on the list are largely occupied by significant news events, but fictional moments from beloved TV shows also find their place. Among these are the poignant farewell of Hawkeye to his best friend B.J. and the war in the final episode of “M.A.S.H.” from 1983 (No. 8), Linus’s recitation of the nativity story in “A Charlie Brown Christmas” from 1965 (No. 14), and the highly debated cut-to-black ending of “The Sopranos” from 2007 (No. 36).
The rankings also include a scene from a show nominated for this year’s Emmy Awards—the final moments of Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett on HBO’s “The Last of Us” (No. 56). Offerman has already won an Emmy for this special episode, and “The Last of Us” is one of the top nominees alongside “Succession,” “The White Lotus,” and “Ted Lasso.”
Memorable Moments from Ellen, ‘Seinfeld,’ and Music History
Several other notable moments made it onto the list, such as the groundbreaking “Ellen” episode where Ellen DeGeneres reveals she is gay (No. 13), the unforgettable “Soup Nazi” episode of “Seinfeld” (No. 27), the debut of Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” music video (No. 48), and Whitney Houston’s breathtaking performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” during the Super Bowl (No. 65). Additionally, cherished moments from “Sesame Street” and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” also found their place on the list.
