Chrissy Teigen, the beloved star of “Chrissy’s Court,” marked her 38th birthday in a distinctive and introspective way. She took to Instagram on December 1 to provide an insight into her birthday celebration, which featured both conventional festivities and an unconventional mental health treatment known as ketamine therapy.
In a heartfelt caption accompanying a photo of herself and her husband John Legend, Teigen recounted her day, saying, “I had a really nice birthday, went to see my friends @flamingo_estate, had a beautiful lunch with friends, then did ketamine therapy and saw space and time and baby Jack and some weird penguins and cried and cried and cried. Then I laid with my babies, had a hot pot, and spent time with my best friend.”
Chrissy Teigen has been candid about her experiences, particularly the devastating pregnancy loss she and Legend endured in September 2020, naming their lost child Jack. Since that heartbreaking time, Teigen, who is also a mother to Luna (7) and Miles (5), welcomed two more additions to her family. Their daughter Esti was born in January 2023, while their son Wren was born via a surrogate in June 2023.
Ketamine, originally developed as an anesthetic in the 1960s and later popularized as a club drug in the 1990s for its psychedelic effects, has garnered attention in recent years for its potential mental health benefits. Studies suggest that ketamine may assist individuals in managing treatment-resistant depression. Some view it as a potential alternative to traditional antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which often come with unwanted side effects such as changes in appetite and sexual function. Those interested in ketamine therapy typically visit specialized clinics, where they receive the drug intravenously.
While Chrissy Teigen has openly discussed her mental health struggles and the positive impact of talk therapy on her life, this marks the first time she has publicly mentioned her experience with ketamine therapy. She is not alone in using ketamine therapy as a tool for healing; several other celebrities have shared their positive experiences with the treatment. Lamar Odom, for instance, has credited ketamine therapy with helping him manage his substance use disorder. Similarly, Sharon Osbourne revealed in a 2021 interview that ketamine treatment played a significant role in helping her process her emotions following her departure from “The Talk.”
Teen Mom star Tyler Baltierra also opened up about his ketamine therapy journey in a 2023 episode of his MTV series. He discussed the process, saying, “Doing it was a little bit scary at first, to be honest, but I was ready for a deep dive, especially doing it with a therapist and medical professionals involved. Ketamine is a pretty sedating experience. Having done that recreationally and having a lot of enlightenment with that, I felt like this was the best route to really get to the core of the issues I’ve had.”
