New Report Uncovers $1.8 Billion Deal for Spy Satellites
A recent Reuters report has uncovered deeper ties between SpaceX and US national security. The astronautics company has signed a $1.8 billion deal in 2021 with a US intelligence agency to develop a network of spy satellites, as reported by the outlet.
Five sources familiar with the program revealed that the satellite network, created in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), aims to provide enhanced capabilities for the US military and intelligence agencies to identify targets worldwide.
“The National Reconnaissance Office is developing the most capable, diverse, and resilient space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system the world has ever seen,” stated a spokesperson for the agency to Reuters.
SpaceX’s Growing Influence in National Security
SpaceX’s ties to US national security have long been documented, but the recent report sheds new light on the depth of the company’s connections to American intelligence and military powers. In 2022, the company unveiled its “Starshield” satellites tailored for government use, equipped with advanced data security and end-to-end encryption.
Furthermore, SpaceX has been involved in providing satellite connectivity for military operations in Ukraine, and there have been requests for similar services for military forces in Taiwan. However, Elon Musk’s influence and behavior have raised concerns among critics, who question the reliability of his companies for US intelligence investment.
