Orion Assembly Plant and Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping Affected
General Motors (GM) has announced plans to lay off a total of 1,314 employees at two factories in Michigan. The layoffs are a result of ending production of vehicles at these plants.
Orion Assembly Plant to Cut 945 Jobs
According to a WARN notice filed by GM, the Orion Assembly plant will experience the majority of the layoffs, with 945 jobs being cut. These layoffs are expected to take place on January 1.
Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping to Cut 369 Jobs
In a separate WARN notice, GM revealed that it will be cutting 369 jobs at the Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping plant. This is in connection to the discontinuation of production of the Camaro muscle car at this facility. The layoffs will be conducted in phases, starting on January 1 and concluding in March.
These layoffs follow GM’s earlier announcement in October that it would be delaying production of two all-electric pickups at the Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping plant, resulting in the transfer of nearly 1,000 workers to other GM facilities in Michigan.
GM’s Cruise Unit to Cut 24% of Workforce
GM’s self-driving vehicle unit, Cruise, has also announced layoffs affecting nearly 24% of its employees. This comes as the unit faces an ongoing safety investigation into its robotaxi technology.
The announcement of the layoffs came shortly after GM fired nine executives from Cruise, including Chief Operating Officer Gil West. These changes are part of an effort to address the safety concerns raised during the probe.
UAW Accuses Honda, Hyundai, and Volkswagen of Union-Busting
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has accused Honda, Hyundai, and Volkswagen of engaging in union-busting activities. The UAW is committed to full transparency and rebuilding trust, emphasizing safety, integrity, and accountability.
In response to the layoffs, GM has stated that it will offer alternative job opportunities to the affected employees within the company.
