Strict Regulations Apply to Almost All Online Platforms in the EU
The European Union is taking a significant step in its mission to ensure a safer and more transparent online environment. On Saturday, the EU expanded its digital rulebook to cover nearly all online platforms, marketplaces, and intermediaries operating within the 27-nation bloc. This move comes as a continuation of the crackdown on toxic social media content and unsafe ecommerce products that began last year, targeting the most popular services.
DSA Requirements: User Safety and Accountability
The Digital Services Act (DSA), already in effect for major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Amazon, and Wikipedia, imposes strict requirements on internet platforms. These requirements aim to protect internet users and include measures such as:
- Making it easier to report counterfeit or unsafe goods
- Flagging and addressing harmful or illegal content, including hate speech
- Banning ads targeted at children
Under the DSA, transparency is key. Platforms must provide clear information about digital ads, including the reasons behind specific advertisements and their financial backers. Furthermore, platforms cannot target users based on sensitive data, such as political or religious beliefs and sexual preferences. Content moderation decisions must be explained to users, ensuring accountability and providing clarity regarding post takedowns or account suspensions.
Wider Coverage, Smaller Exemptions
The EU’s expansion of the DSA regulations means that thousands more websites, including popular platforms like eBay and OnlyFans, will potentially fall under its scrutiny. However, small businesses with fewer than 50 employees and annual revenue of less than 10 million euros ($11 million) will be exempt from these regulations.
Shaping a Safer and Transparent Online World
European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager sees this as a significant milestone, stating, “Users, Member States, and platforms can now use the tools under the DSA to shape a safer and more transparent online world.” The EU’s commitment to fundamental values and principles is at the forefront of this regulation, ensuring a secure digital space for all.
X Investigation: Elon Musk’s Platform under Scrutiny
In line with the DSA provisions, the EU has commenced an investigation into X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter and founded by Elon Musk. Suspicions have arisen regarding X’s compliance with the DSA, particularly in curbing the spread of illegal content. This investigation demonstrates the EU’s dedication to enforcing the regulations and holding platforms accountable for their responsibilities.
