Resignation and Allegations
Zakia Wardak, Afghanistan’s Consul-General in Mumbai, India, resigned following reports of being caught smuggling nearly $2 million worth of gold into the country. Wardak announced her resignation on social media, citing her decision to step away from her role effective May 5, 2024.
Gold Smuggling Incident
Indian media reported that Wardak was stopped by authorities at Mumbai airport last month, arriving from Dubai with about 55 pounds of gold. Although she was not arrested due to diplomatic immunity, the gold, valued at $1.9 million, was confiscated.
Impact on Afghan Nationals
Wardak’s resignation has left thousands of Afghan nationals in India without consular representation. The closure of Afghanistan’s embassy in New Delhi in November had already made Wardak the country’s most senior representative in India.
Challenges Faced
In her resignation statement, Wardak mentioned encountering personal attacks and defamation over the past year. She highlighted the challenges faced by women in Afghan society, without directly addressing the gold smuggling allegations.
Diplomatic Situation
Following the Taliban’s return to power in Kabul, many Afghan embassies abroad operate under different systems. While some embassies are under Taliban control, others continue routine consular work with former government-appointed diplomats.
